“oEmbed is a format for allowing an embedded representation of a URL on third party sites.”
I once conjured up something similar as a way to get trusted rich media back into email… my model was based on a centralized authority, and some trust may still be required to do this right, but oEmbed is a much cooler implementation.
CNAMES vs. A-Records for Custom Domain Names
I remember asking Marco and the Tumblr support alias this question several times back when I started using Tumblr, but never got a reply, so I’ll pose the question here:
“Why does Tumblr use A-records for custom domains rather than CNAMEs?”
For those of you who don’t know the nuance of the question, a CNAME is essentially an alias from one host name to another, whereas...

– Emily Gould - NYTimes.com
Just read the post that everyone’s been talking about. I wasn’t that familiar with Emily, but it was a good read, and I could definitely relate.
Seattle, please don't be so Seattle-like...
I was forwarded this email by a friend who lives in Brooklyn, NY. It made me sad because while Seattle has this reputation for being all of the cool-sounding adjectives you can think of, this sort of thing happens with EVERYTHING in this city.
This was the first I had heard about the piece, and after looking at the sketches, I’m shocked at the response it has gotten, with people calling...

Velocity Art and Design, South Lake Union (MAP) Wednesday, May 28th 6-8pm
Velocity Art And Design (where my wife works) is hosting a series of events to encourage networking, inspiration, and creative thinking in our community.
The next event, is tomorrow night, and features the authors of four very cool NW design blogs (Decorno, Shelterrific, notmartha, and MirrorMirror) talking about, well,...
Sasquatch Wrapup
We had a great time at Sasquatch this weekend. With multiple stages, it sometimes felt like everyone we wanted to see overlapped with one another, and I was sad to miss a bunch of acts, but I was really pleased with all of the performances we caught.
Highlights
All of the mainstage acts sounded excellent. My votes for best performance go to Tegan & Sara and Death Cab, but really, there...

This year’s movies for the outdoor cinema in South Lake Union are Bring it On, Juno, and the winner of the vote for: Heathers, Say Anything, or Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
I can’t decide which one to vote for…

Seattle, WA I’ve never met Jason, but I’ve always had this love/hate fascination with him. I mean, here’s this guy who is kind of arrogant and occasionally abrasive, yet at the same time very charming and obviously very intelligent. He raised $50 million for Jobster, hired 100 people, and then, to the uneducated eye at least, completely floundered. Now,...

I wholeheartedly disagree with Marco on this point.
There are many people I have gotten to know through comments on my blogs, their blogs, and other peoples’ blogs. It isn’t about validation, it’s about discussion and interaction with others who share a commonality that brought them to the same page and inspired them to be more than just a passive reader.
I appreciate the...
The Netflix Player by Roku →
I’ve had a variety of media center equipment over the years, but my needs have gotten less demanding, and I’ve been looking for a cheap and easy solution. I don’t need a DVR, and I don’t really even care about photos or music in this context. I just want to be able to watch movies and shows that we don’t get over the air.
We occasionally use Hulu and iTunes via my...

seattle tumblr meetups?
I don’t know how many seattleites are on tumblr, but I follow at least a handful… I’d be down with a meetup!

Amazon MP3 Widget
Amazon released a new widget that lets you embed music samples from their MP3 store. One nice option is that you can have a playlist of your recently purchased music.
I’m going to try and put that in my sidebar, but my associates account and my purchasing account are in an odd state where I don’t think I can link them, and I’m not sure i can get it to work with my purchasing...
Adobe Labs - Flash Player 10 →
Some great new features in the next release of Flash Player, including:
Native 3D Effects
Custom Filters and Effects
Local File Access
The first two are flashy (no pun intended) and I’m sure they will lead to some pretty cool stuff, but the last one is really going to take things to the next level as far as I’m concerned. No more having to round-trip files to a server just to be...
Disqus and Seesmic Pair Up For Video Comments →
There is a great discussion about this over on Fred’s original post, and I’ve posted my thoughts (1 & 2) there, but basically, I agree.
Video comments are a novelty, and while you can make some very valid arguments about the power of video as a communication medium, in this context their benefits really don’t come close, in my opinion, to outweighing their drawbacks.

A way to help the people of Myanmar...
I spoke with my mom, and thankfully all of our immediate family in Myanmar is safe and accounted for.
One of my biggest concerns about relief donations is that the money and supplies would get lost in the burmese government’s bureaucracy and corruption, and wouldn’t make it to the people who need it the most.
I don’t know this organization myself, but a group like this,...

Ranting on the Rants
A lot of people are bitching about the $999 design fee from Tumblize; I don’t see what the big deal is…
1. Sure, you can get it done for less (or for free, or do it yourself), but that’s true about most services. If you like their work, and the price seems fair to you, I say go for it. It’s no different from any other web design or template customization, where prices...
