My Thought for the Day
Hallelujah! whitneymcn: If you find yourself starting your criticism of a product or service with the words “how hard can it be to…” you should really stop yourself. You’re about to say something really stupid. You just acknowledged that you can’t offer an informed opinion, so why not just take a breath and start again? Perhaps you could offer something constructive instead?

DNS Attack Code Has Been Published →
The latest DNS cache poisoning attack has been published. If you run a DNS server, and haven’t patched yet, you should really think about doing that ASAP. If your ISP hasn’t patched their DNS server, consider using OpenDNS.

An excellent post by Alex Iskold that points out what most experienced technologists already know: the most important part of being a good software engineer (or anything for that matter) is having a solid grasp and understanding of the fundamental concepts involved.

Tumblr Bookmarklets
Now *THIS* is really interesting. I could picture a whole set of bookmarklet-based tumblr-viewing tools (slideshow, link aggregator, etc…) for the power reader. I’m a little torn because I know people put a lot of effort into their themes and having their tumblelogs viewed in the way they’ve specified, but I’m also excited to be able to flip through peoples’ photos...

Tumblr MP3 Player →
Very cool, this looks great! It also reminds me that I never posted instructions for *my* now ancient tumblr mp3 widget (seen in my left sidebar), so here they are if you want to use it. It’s especially handy if you want to embed the music from your tumblelog on another site, like your blog or myspace profile. Also, for the techies out there, you can also use any XSPF-compliant audio...

Free Idea for TipJoy
If you haven’t seen TipJoy, it is essentially a web 2.0 ( easy-to-use! social! micropayments! ) version of Amazon’s old school Honor System. I love the idea, but still feel like there to is too much effort/thought required to tip someone.  So here’s my free idea for the day: Allow me to make automated payments of a specified amount (say $0.10), whenever I visit a TipJoy-enabled...

The Great S3 Outage of July 2008
When S3 launched less than 2.5 years ago, it was clear that it was a game-changer as far as storage infrastructure was concerned. Today’s outage, however, really reveals just how dependent many webapps have become on the service. I use S3 for personal storage, as well as for static resources like my tumblr music widget (which does ~500k hits per month). For roughly $2/mo, I get performance...

Taking Control of Your Online Persona
continuations: I am therefore surprised to see how many people are not in control of their online persona. The only information that google turns up is what others have written about them David made the same point the other day, with his quote “The cat is out of the bag, and the only way to take back that control is to get out there and have a presence, have an identity that you feel...

I met Zach Hale at the Mashable SummerMash event tonight. It’s cool to make a real-world connection with someone I follow online (and to introduce myself with “I follow you!”) — even if he doesn’t follow me! Turns out that I know Zach’s roommate, Adam, too. Also in attendance were a bunch of the Seattle tech scenesters, and it’s always great catching up...

Tumblr audio to XSPF
Yesterday, I was contemplating building a new widget to play all of the songs tagged with specific themes in TheMusic (theme+music), a tumblr group that I’m part of. The more I thought about it, and thought about my limited flash & design skills, I figured I should take a look at existing players than spending the time on building my own. XSPF (“spiff”) is an open-source XML...
