Interesting observation. I’ll have to give this more thought, but Bijan’s examples for East ( Tumblr, Etsy, OMGPOP, Vimeo and the Hype Machine.) and West ( Friendfeed, Mint, imeem, and zazzle ) certainly support the argument.

One reason for this that I see is the fact that a lot of these east coast companies were started by people coming out of interactive agencies, used to doing hot-looking web work for media and advertising companies, and wanting to develop an experience, whereas the west coast companies were started by software engineers simply looking to solve a technical problem.

I’m fine with NYC being Apple, and SF being Google, as long as no one says Seattle is Microsoft :)
