I’ve had a variety of media center equipment over the years, but my needs have gotten less demanding, and I’ve been looking for a cheap and easy solution. I don’t need a DVR, and I don’t really even care about photos or music in this context. I just want to be able to watch movies and shows that we don’t get over the air.
We occasionally use Hulu and iTunes via my laptop, but I’ve been looking for for a more integrated experience. I’ve thought about a Tivo with Amazon Unbox, or an Apple TV, but both are overkill, and I’ve never been compelled to pull the trigger.
Today’s release of the Netflix Player is pretty exciting. We’ve been Netflix subscribers on and off over the years, and I like the service, but the biggest problem is that we’ll have 3 dvds we aren’t in the mood for, and they’ll sit at home for a month or two, while we end up going to the store and buying whatever movie we feel like watching that night.
We don’t use Windows at home, so I’ve never used Netflix’s on-demand service, but I’m looking forward to giving this device a try. For a $99 purchase price, and no additional monthly fee, we’ll be able to satisfy our impulse watching needs, while continuing to use our queue to access the movies that aren’t yet available for download. That’s pretty cool!
