So, here’s the verdict on the much anticipated new restaurant, Spinasse:
Delicious!
We walked in tonight without a reservation, around 6pm, and were seated immediately. We may have been lucky though, as several other customers later in the night were turned away. The plan is to have a couple spots available for walk-ins, as well as the bar (where I think we’ll be spending a lot of time…)
If you sit at the bar, the menu is a la carte, but otherwise, you have three choices, which are priced per person, and, since everything is served family-style, must be agreed upon by everyone. I can’t remember the names, so I’ll paraphrase:
- Light: 1 appetizer and one primo. $35/pp.
- Regular: 2 appetizers, one primo, one secondi. $47/pp
- Everything: everything on the menu (5 appetizers, 3 primo, 2 secondi). $75/pp
We opted for the “regular”, and it was a perfect medium-sized meal for two. Starters were hand-sliced prosciutto with local melon, and an excellent chicory salad with house-marinated mushrooms. The pasta — for which the chef is famous — was an agnolotti with a classic italian meat filling in a perfectly done sage butter sauce. Other choices were a gnocchi, and a noodle-pasta with a beef ragu, both of which looked amazing. The secondi was a delicious roasted goat with chickpeas (pictured). The other secondi option was a roasted chicken.
I don’t know much about italian wine besides chianti in the straw bottle, but they had a wide selection of varietals and prices, and the 2005 barbera that the waitress suggested really hit the spot :) We also started with a sparkling wine from Monterotondo that was deliciously cider-like.
The menu will rotate weekly.
There was only one dessert choice, which was a nice slice of tomme cheese, with a little bit of honey and some ripe (and warm!) peaches; perfect, since Brooke doesn’t like sweets for dessert.
While there was nothing out-of-this-world amazing about the food, there wasn’t really supposed to be. It was perfect for what it was, a nice, rustic, italian meal. I had no complaints about any of the dishes, and was quite impressed for how solid the entire experience was, especially considering that tonight was opening night. We’ll be back often, and I suggest you give it a try too.
