Fanfarlo - A Minor Place (Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy cover)
Fruit Bats - Never Tear Us Apart (INXS Cover)
She’ll never remember, but the Fruit Bats at the Mural Amphitheater last August was Ruby’s first-ever concert. It was a gorgeous summer evening, we sat in the grass, and they closed with this song. It was pretty epic.
Cowboy Junkies - Powderfinger
Bijan posted Neil Young’s version of Powderfinger yesterday. I love ol’ Neil, and it’s a great song, but as I said in the comments, this cover by the Cowboy Junkies will always be the definitive version for me.
Justin Townes Earle & Dawn Landes - Do I Ever Cross Your Mind?
Besides various takes on Jolene, you just don’t hear many good Dolly Parton covers. Here’s one.
(via When You Awake)
Josh Rouse - Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want
Earlier today, Dave Hyndman posted an excellent cover of Modest Mouse performed by Josh Ritter. Dave found the track in a collection of “17 cover songs by six different artists named Josh”, over on the music blog Cover Lay Down.
Here’s another track from that collection: Josh Rouse covering The Smiths.
The Decemberists - Begin The Begin (R.E.M. Cover)
Seems a fitting cover for the week Michael Stipe turned 50.
Caitlin Rose - Dead Flowers (Rolling Stones)
I posted Deer Tick’s take on this song a few months back, but how could I resist a girl so country, and whose myspace slogan is “Not even God loves Toby Keith.”
The National - Mansion on the Hill (Springsteen)
Continuing my recent The National kick with this awesome cover.
Johnny Cash - Thirteen
A song for Friday the 13th. Not exactly a cover, Danzig wrote this for Cash, but then recorded it himself later as well.
