We had a little server hiccup last night, and when we noticed it was taking a little longer than usual to come back up, we emailed the noc to take a look at the console.
This was the extent of their reply - sweet cameraphone!

This is what the TeachStreet team been working on for the past few weeks. I think it’s looking pretty damn good.

We’ve spent a lot of time building out the core TeachStreet marketplace and platform, but this is our first attempt at tackling a vertical with lots of specific content including a GMAT blog directory, study plans, practice tests, and of course a great selection of GMAT Prep classes.  Check it out!

Update: We’ve created mini-sites for a couple other test prep subjects, including one for SAT Courses, and one for the ACT.

TeachStreet Holiday Party

In deciding on the plan for this year’s holiday party, after the original idea of snowshoeing in the mountains was voted down, we determined that the criteria for a successful event are as follows:

  1. Be in Seattle
  2. Have plenty of food and drinks
  3. Have a competitive component

And, that’s it.

Not a whole lot to go on, but what we ended up with was super-casual, and lots of fun. We started out with burgers at The Counter, then headed over to the Ballard Loft, where we had a few drinks, and challenged each other to shuffleboard, pool, big buck hunter, and darts.

I had an epic come-from-behind victory at shuffleboard, from Joseph’s 14-2 match point to a 16-14 victory - just had to mention it

The next stop was King’s Hardware, for a skeeball tournament, some more drinks, and finally a round of Trivial Pursuit on Natala’s iPhone. Sadly, her battery died before the winner could be crowned.

Learn to Row at Seattle’s Pocock Rowing Center.
I’ve been looking for fun new things to learn, and this introductory rowing class was a perfect fit. It’s a screaming deal at $50 for (6) two-hour classes, and in three weeks, I’ve gone from knowing absolutely nothing about rowing to feeling confident and being somewhat-competent at it.
Plus, with the gorgeous summer nights we’ve been having, it’s been worth the money just to get to hang out on the water and see the city from a new perspective.

Craigslist Is Vulnerable

Great post, and thanks for the TeachStreet mention (and praise!).

continuations:

It is true that people still offer and look for something like a cooking class on Craigslist right now, but a dedicated site such as Teachstreet has the opportunity to start skimming the best teachers and most dedicated students from the top of Craigslist.  Over time — with the right execution (and they are off to a great start) — such a site could become so much more compelling than Craigslist that it could suck up most of the “lifelong learning” type listings.  Now with only a small share of that online that would not have been compelling, but when pretty much every search for a class starts online that becomes a huge opportunity.

As of 11:58pm, we’ve got v3 launched, and TeachStreet is live in the SF Bay Area!
It has been an extremely busy few weeks for everyone, but I’m very proud of what we shipped, and everyone did an amazing job. From engineering to outreach, design to data import, this wouldn’t have been possible without the 110% that each person put in. And, as you can see from the photo above, we even managed to stay smiling through it all!
